Where to Go?

Map of Switzerland - click for larger view There are so many great places to go in Switzerland, it's easy to be uncertain about where to spend your time. Here are a few of my favorites - Luzern, Zermatt, Murren and Zurich. I love the mountains in Switzerland, which are as stunning as any in the world. Switzerland's cities are nice, but not as interesting as Paris or Venice or Prague, or many other choices that Europe offers. My simplest advice is if you're going to travel in Switzerland, spend 1 or 2 days in the cities, then go to the mountains.

If you're traveling in Switzerland for a week, here's a good introductory itinerary for you. It involves a lot of travel, but hits most of Switzerland's highlights, and this itinerary helps minimize the travel times...
Day 1 - Luzern (also spelled Lucerne)
Day 2 - Lugano
Day 3 - Zermatt
Day 4 - extra day in Zermatt
Day 5 - Murren or Wengen
Day 6 - extra day in Murren or Wengen
Day 7 - Zurich

If you have a bit more time, say 11 days, I would suggest adding Appenzell and Pontresina, plus an extra day in Lucerne. A good itinerary, keeping travel time to a minimum, could go like this...
Day 1 - Appenzell
Day 2 - Lucerne
Day 3 - extra day in Lucerne
Day 4 - Lugano
Day 5 - Pontresina
Day 6 - extra day in Pontresina
Day 7 - Zermatt
Day 8 - extra day in Zermatt
Day 9 - Murren or Wengen
Day 10 - extra day in Murren or Wengen
Day 11 - Zurich

If you'd like to do something like this on your trip, but don't feel like going through all the details of finding hotels, railpasses and maps, we offer self-guided tours for both hikers and non-hikers alike, very similar to these itineraries. Check out the Alpinehikers Self-guided tours page if you're interested in one of our standard tours or in customizing one of your own.
