Where to Go?

Map of Switzerland - click for larger view There are so many great places to go in Switzerland, it's easy to be uncertain about where to spend your time. A few of my favorites are Lucerne, Zermatt, Murren and Zurich. I love the mountains in Switzerland, which are as stunning as any in the world. Switzerland's cities are all very nice as well. If not as interesting as Paris or Venice or Prague, they are still clean, walkable, and enjoyable, with historic Old Town centers and beautiful locations. My simplest advice is if you're going to travel in Switzerland, spend 1 or 2 days in the cities, then go to the mountains.

If you're traveling in Switzerland for a week, here's a good introductory itinerary for you. It involves a lot of travel, but hits most of Switzerland's highlights, and this itinerary helps minimize the travel times...
Day 1 - Zermatt
Day 2 - extra day in Zermatt
Day 3 - Murren or Wengen
Day 4 - extra day in Murren or Wengen
Day 5 - Lucerne (spelled Luzern in German)
Day 6 - Lugano
Day 7 - Zurich

If you have a bit more time, say 14 days, I would suggest adding Pontresina or St. Moritz in the Engadine, Montreux or Vevey along lake Geneva, plus extra days in Lucerne and Lugano. With a slightly slower pace, you might focus more on some of the scenic train trips. A good itinerary could go like this...
Day 1 - Lucerne
Day 2 - extra day in Lucerne
Day 3 - Murren or Wengen (by Goldenpass train)
Day 4 - extra day in Murren or Wengen
Day 5- Montreux or Vevey (still Goldenpass train)
Day 6 - extra day in Montreux or Vevey
Day 7 - Zermatt
Day 8 - extra day in Zermatt
Day 9 - St Moritz or Pontresina (by Glacier Express train)
Day 10 - extra day in St Moritz or Pontresina
Day 11 - Lugano (by Bernina Express train)
Day 12 - extra day in Lugano
Day 13 - Zurich

Of course, many people will want to slow down, see fewer areas, but spend more time in each. There are many ways to arrange a great itinerary to Switzerland! If you'd like to do something like this on your trip, but don't feel like going through all the details of finding hotels, railpasses and maps, we offer self-guided tours for both hikers and non-hikers alike, very similar to these itineraries. Check out the Alpinehikers Self-guided tours page if you're interested in one of our standard tours or in customizing one of your own.
